Types of Knowledge in Islam

Fard Ain (Individual Obligation)

Essential knowledge every Muslim must acquire: basics of faith, prayer, purification, and halal/haram in daily life.

Fard Kifayah (Communal Obligation)

Specialized knowledge needed by the community: medicine, engineering, Islamic jurisprudence, and other beneficial sciences.

Religious Sciences

Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Tafsir, Arabic language, and Islamic history that deepen understanding of the faith.

Worldly Sciences

Sciences, technology, arts, and skills that benefit humanity and contribute to the betterment of society.

Etiquettes of Seeking Knowledge

  • Pure Intention: Seek knowledge for Allah's pleasure, not for worldly gain or showing off.
  • Respect Teachers: Honor and respect those who teach you, as they are inheritors of the Prophets.
  • Act Upon Knowledge: Apply what you learn in your life. Knowledge without action is of little benefit.
  • Be Humble: The more you learn, the more humble you should become. Arrogance blocks knowledge.
  • Share Knowledge: Teach others what you know. The best charity is sharing beneficial knowledge.
