Explore comprehensive Quranic guidance on marriage, relationships between spouses, marital rights and responsibilities, and the sacred bond of Nikah in Islam.
Marriage in Islam is a sacred contract (Nikah) that goes beyond a mere social arrangement. The Quran presents marriage as one of Allah's signs, a source of tranquility, love, and mercy between spouses. It's considered half of one's faith and a means to achieve spiritual and emotional fulfillment.
The Quranic verses about marriage cover various aspects: choosing a righteous spouse, the marriage contract, rights and responsibilities of both partners, treating each other with kindness and respect, and resolving conflicts with wisdom and patience.
"And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty."
An-Nur 24:32
"They (your wives) are clothing for you and you are clothing for them."
Al-Baqarah 2:187
"And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good."
An-Nisa 4:19
"And women have rights similar to their obligations, according to what is fair, and men have a degree of responsibility over them."
Al-Baqarah 2:228
"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because of what Allah has given one over the other and because they support them from their means."
An-Nisa 4:34
"And give the women their dowries graciously."
An-Nisa 4:4
Marriage requires the free consent of both parties. No one can be forced into marriage, and both the bride and groom have the right to accept or refuse.
The groom must give a dowry to the bride as a gift, which becomes her exclusive property. This symbolizes respect and commitment to the marriage.
Spouses are commanded to treat each other with kindness, even in times of disagreement. The best among believers are those who are best to their families.
While roles may differ, both spouses have rights and responsibilities. Men are providers and protectors, while women are honored and respected partners.
The Quran emphasizes choosing a spouse based on faith and character. Righteousness and piety are prioritized over wealth or beauty.
